Carbon – “Net Zero” Foundations

Capacity

5 - 50 People

Duration

1 Day (6 Hours)

This introductory course provides a practical foundation in Net Zero Carbon concepts for engineers, managers, and decision-makers who are new to the topic.

About the Course

About the Course

This introductory course provides a practical foundation in Net Zero Carbon concepts for engineers, managers, and decision-makers who are new to the topic. The focus is on core terminology, key frameworks, and realistic examples, so that participants leave with a clear understanding of what “Net Zero” really means for their organization and projects.

Through short lectures, interactive discussions, and simple exercises, we connect global climate targets with day-to-day technical and business decisions in energy-intensive industries.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between carbon neutrality, Net Zero and Science Based Targets.

  • Understand the basics of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and emission scopes (Scope 1–2–3).

  • Identify the main emission sources in typical industrial and energy systems.

  • Describe key decarbonisation levers: efficiency, electrification, fuel switch, CCS/CCUS, offsetting.

  • Read and interpret corporate Net Zero roadmaps and climate-related commitments.

  • Recognise the role of policy, regulation and finance in Net Zero strategies.

  • Understand the relationship between technology options (e-fuels, hydrogen, CCS, renewables) and Net Zero targets.

  • Prepare a simple first-pass decarbonisation checklist for their own organisation or project.

Benefits

By participating in this course, you will:

  • Gain a solid conceptual map of Net Zero Carbon without getting lost in buzzwords.

  • Build a shared vocabulary that helps engineers, HSE, finance and management talk about the same things.

  • Be able to ask the right questions when reviewing decarbonisation proposals or supplier offers.

  • Better understand how your current projects fit into the bigger climate and energy transition picture.

  • Reduce the risk of “greenwashing by mistake” by knowing basic standards and limitations.

  • Leave with simple templates and checklists you can immediately use in internal meetings and workshops.

Who Should Attend

This foundations-level training is designed for:

  • Engineers and technical specialists who are new to Net Zero and climate topics.

  • Project managers and product owners working on energy, process, or infrastructure projects.

  • HSE, sustainability, and corporate strategy professionals who need a technical primer.

  • Procurement and supplier development teams evaluating low-carbon technologies and services.

  • Anyone who will later attend more advanced Net Zero / decarbonisation courses and wants to start with a clear baseline.

Related Courses

Participants of this course often continue with:

  • Hydrogen Economy – Concepts & Value Chains

  • Industrial Decarbonisation Roadmapping

  • Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS/CCUS) for Engineers
